The Secret of Socks
Column 2
Thank you for visiting the website of the Keio-Waseda Support Committee.
In the previous Episode7, I told you about the 1970s Six University Baseball.
In this column, we will introduce the secrets of the socks worn by the players.
If you look at the socks of each school, Waseda University wears dark red socks, and Tokyo University wears light blue socks. As you can see in the photo, the baseball club players are wearing navy base socks with a red belt.
What I would like to focus on this time is the two white lines in the red part. This white line is not meaningless! What does this white line mean...?
The answer is"The number of times the cram school baseball club has won the championship"What...!!
In the nearly 100-year history of baseball at the Six Universities, all the schools have won the championship only seven times. It is extremely difficult to win the championship by taking points from all the teams in one season, but I think you can see that it is even more difficult to achieve.
The first time the cram school baseball club won the championship was in the autumn league of 1928. The cram school baseball team, which was the star of Koshien at that time, achieved 10 consecutive wins, and achieved the first victory in the history of six university baseball. Taking this victory as an opportunity, we decided to add a white sock line to every win, but it took more than half a century to add a second line.
In the 1980s, when the championship was far away, the rapid advance suddenly came. It was this feat that triggered the recovery that I told you about in the previous episode. In the fall of 1985, the cram school baseball club, which had been away from the Tamaha Cup for 13 years, had a perfect combination of pitching and batting, and accumulated winning stars. They had one draw at Meidai, but also won the Keiso match. 10 wins and 1 minute won the win after a long time! In this way, we were able to engrave the second line into the sock, leading to the current design.
and the third line. In the fall of 2019, they were one win away from winning the championship, but unfortunately lost to Waseda University. This season we will miss the complete victory, and we will lick the bitterness.
The spring of 2022 has finally returned to the format of the previous league match after the corona disaster. The base for adding a third line is good enough. Now that each school requires talented people, it is by no means an easy task to win all the championships, but there is no doubt that it is the earnest wish of the people involved, Keio alumni, and Keio students. Beyond the victory, great achievements are waiting. Everyone, please pay attention to the record!
as a side note...
In the fall of 2020, Waseda University has achieved an undefeated victory with a record of 7 wins and 3 draws. Waseda University, with pitcher Hayakawa (currently Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles), won a dramatic victory in the Keio Waseda match, where the championship was at stake, and grabbed the trophy. In order to prevent the spread of infection, the 3rd round was not held as an official record, but it was a season that strongly felt the momentum and strength of Waseda University at the time.
